Dear Parents,
This month, we will be recognizing our mothers, grandmothers, and all those special figures in our lives. Parenting is the most important job that you could have, and it isn’t always easy and can sometimes be a thankless job, but I know we wouldn’t change a thing.
I would like to share this with you:
Happiness comes from learning to give, rather than seeking to get. Remember to . . . .
- Give children the communication skills they need to solve problems rather than getting them to act or be “nice”.
- Give children encouragement by attributing positive motives to all their acts rather than forcing them to feel bad in order to behave better.
- Give children lifelong skills they will need to contribute to society rather than getting them to behave in ways that impress others.
- Give children a model of happy, loving, responsible living rather than getting them to “act like they should”.
Find something intangible that you feel you lack in life (hope, enthusiasm, courage), give it to others and you will possess it yourself. Giving and receiving are one. The first step to resolving a problem is to give away your solution. (From “Easy to Love, Difficult to Discipline”, by Becky A. Bailey, Ph.D.)
